The Yakich Legacy
Our founder, Walter J. Yakich, believed in the Power of Education ™ to transform lives. He often said, “No-one can take your education away from you. Education is the best gift you can receive.”
To honor his wife, Mary Alice, he founded the Mary Alice Yakich Educational Foundation in 1999. Mary Alice was a woman of integrity, had a great deal of character, and was very active in serving others. She was the first woman alderman in the State of Wisconsin back in the sixties and also served for years on the City of Oak Creek Planning Commission. She had a lot of drive and determination, and stood up for the rights of others serving on the Milwaukee County Human Rights Commission. She often said she was born 30 years too soon and, yet, the impact she had in politics and in her commitment to community service paved the way for other women to follow.
Over the years, the Foundation has made a significant impact in supporting students with scholarships to attend select schools primarily in southeastern Wisconsin. The Foundation also actively supports exemplary educators and educational endeavors that enrich the academic and spiritual lives of students.
Walter and Mary Alice both came from very humble beginnings, grew up during the Great Depression, and lived their lives with passion and purpose. Walter was often inspired and touched by the success and appreciation of scholarship recipients and their families. He was a man of generosity and vision. The Board of the Foundation intends to insure the Yakich Legacy endures for years to come.
